NC Wine Hopper is being renamed with a wider focus

Yes, you heard correctly. The Wine Hopper mobile apps are slowly being renamed and refocused. We have started with NC Wine Hopper for Android, available now, which is now “Wet Your Whistle in NC.” The iOS version didn’t make it under Apple’s holiday cutoff date, so it should be available before January 1. After that, we will be releasing the Virginia version – Wet Your Whistle in VA. Finally, we will be releasing Wet Your Whistle in NY.

Why is this change being made? Well, we realized the broad scope of a mobile app focused only on wineries. Additionally, we recognized the limited audience that the app may have been reaching. Do you prefer cider, mead, distilled spirits? With Wet Your Whistle in NC, you get access to web sites, reviews, social media, distance and notes for all of these categories

Wine Hopper Trip Planning

Have you planned a vacation and later wondered what you actually achieved during that time? For the wine enthusiast, Wine Hopper Mobile Apps provide an excellent trip planning resource.

Let’s say you are planning to stay a week in Loudoun County, VA (or Yadkin County, NC). You are a true wine hopper, so the vacation is centered around tasting the best wines, ciders and other offerings of the nearby vineyards. This is where the VA Wine Hopper mobile app will help!

Select a search by Location to Destination, 25 miles is an excellent driving distance. Next you choose Delaplane Cellars as your starting location. Clicking Show Me reveals that there are 6 wineries within a 25 mile radius, located in Delaplane, Berryville, Middleburg, Waterford and Purcellville.

Another option is to pick an area that you know is saturated with wineries and search by mileage using a radius of 10/25/50 miles after arriving at your destination. When searching by mileage, the listings will show the closest first and expand farther as you move down the list.

For those who are detail oriented, you may have noticed a disabled item in Settings – Enhanced Winery Listing. In the next release of the VA Wine Hopper and NC Wine Hopper apps, this selection will be active.

I am listening to user feedback. It was reported that the icons are hard to see and the text is a bit tough to read. For those with excellent eyesight, this is probably not a concern. Others will appreciate the larger icons and fonts presented in this view.

The targeted availability date across both apps and platforms is July 20, 2019.

Wine Hopper Updates

The latest additions to the NC Wine Hopper app are:

  • Walkthrough video of functionality available on the Help menu (? in right corner)
  • Search by mileage from your location (10, 25, 50)

For those of you who like to do your wine hopping in the state of Virginia, the VA Wine Hopper will be available soon. It will initially contain over 250 wineries with a quick growth to more than 300 with quick addition of some restaurants and shops.

New Android Features Released

The anticipated features are here – in the Android version, at least. They are:

  • Mileage from your location to the winery, shop or restaurant – mileage is approximate, use your favorite mapping program for actual driving mileage and time
  • Settings which will enable selection of the details displayed on the winery page, such as City/Region, Phone/Type, City/County, Phone/County
  • Individual notes and rating for each winery, shop and restaurant.
  • if you are on iOS, as it seems 2/3 of the users are, these changes will be available for you soon

This is a view that illustrates the five views available based on the settings you select. I can say that I hope you will never see a screen that looks like this, but after many decades of programming I have discovered that anything is truly possible with computers.

Latest Updates In Progress For NC Wine Hopper App

Personal notes, distance to each location and even more …

These items are being finalized and hopefully in place this weekend. The screenshot above shows the mileage from your location to each winery, shop or restaurant shown.

What is not shown here is the options screen which is also in development. It takes time to calculate the distances, so there will also be an option to disable distance calculation, among other options you will have.

I am still trying to get enough NC Wine trivia questions, so send me some interesting and unique (but verifiable) facts about NC wineries and owners. A couple of interesting facts included so far are – “Q: She is an airborne pilot and he is a jumper, which winery do they own? A: Rockfish Creek” and “Q: Their reception hall has two chandeliers, each made with 154 wine glasses A:Cape Fear”
